So much of an addict’s life is spent thinking about, obtaining, or using drugs, but when that’s taken away when you go to inpatient treatment, you’re left with a lot of free time. The problem is that I don’t have time. I didn’t give up all my old hobbies to drink while staring at the wall all night. I started drinking because I literally never have free time – maybe five minutes at a stretch, certainly not long enough to play my guitar or go for a hike. I used to love reading and now, at best, I only get to read five pages in one day. And that started months and months before I started drinking, so it’s not the alcohol that made it that way.

Take away the pleasures of drinking for the boredom of sobriety? Imagine; being fully present all the time? It’s good drinking because of boredom to get out of your head every now and again; to not be… yourself, all the time. It’s incessant, being stuck with you.

Is Being Sober Boring? Why Not?

It all felt normal, even the terrible parts like awful hangovers and hangxiety. Now that you know the chemical reason for your boredom, let’s explore ways you can proactively work against https://ecosoberhouse.com/ it. You create an imbalance when you use alcohol to artificially boost serotonin and dopamine levels in your brain. This is important to remember when thinking about boredom.

The Best Christmas Party Games To Keep Guests Entertained For … – Bored Panda

The Best Christmas Party Games To Keep Guests Entertained For ….

Posted: Wed, 14 Dec 2022 09:12:40 GMT [source]

But you never completely get over it. If it’s okay with you, Kevin, I’d like to write an update here once a week with my progress, but I don’t want to hog the comments section. People who already have problems with alcohol are looking for solutions within a group of people who have the same problem. It doesn’t make any sense to search for solutions there. It’s like trying to find an apple on an orange tree.

Addiction Therapy Programs

When you’re triggered by experiences like boredom or isolation, the accessibility of alcohol makes it that much harder to refrain from drinking to cope with these difficult feelings. You work hard all day, so it’s nice to come home and have a glass or two of wine to relax. I don’t do clubs anymore, but dinner parties with good food and wine—only good wine—they’re the best. Hangovers after thirty are the worst! I can’t drink like I used to—I mean, I try!

You don’t want to fall down that rabbit hole. It’s hard to fill that time, especially when dealing with alcohol cravings and triggers. My friends and I got together for happy hours after work. On the weekend, we went to bars and clubs. During the day, there were all-inclusive brunches.

How To Deal With Loved Ones Who Don’t Support Your Sobriety

Discuss your drinking patterns and any concerns you have. If your house is well-stocked with alcohol, you’ll likely drink more and more often. So while it may not be safe to go out and drink right now, stocking up on alcohol at home likely isn’t a good idea either. I got on the phone with Dr Amelia Stephens who is a GP in Brisbane.

You could swim with sharks, or try mountain biking, or try new food. Participating in new and thrilling experiences will show you there’s more to life than addiction that you can take advantage of in sobriety. Don’t get your thrills from booze or heroin, get them directly from your own brain by trying new and exciting things.

Alcohol does absolutely nothing to relieve boredom. Try having a conversation with a drunk and you’ll know exactly what I mean. But when alcohol is marketed as this fantastic product that can enhance your life, that’s another story.
